The Threat Of Cyber-terrorism : The Energy Sector
“The FBI considers the cyber threat against our nation to be one of the greatest concerns of the 21st century.”
That comes from a 2009 Statement from Steven R. Chabinsky, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI’s Cyber Division. Though given in 2009, the full testimony is an enlightening look at the kind of work going on at the FBI in the fight against cyber terrorism, and cybercrime as a whole. The testimony continues:
“An increasing array of sophisticated state and non-state actors have the capability to steal, alter, or destroy our sensitive data and, in the worst of cases, to manipulate from afar the process control systems that are meant to ensure the proper functioning of portions of our critical infrastructure.”
THE ENERGY SECTOR – THE COMMON FACTOR
The one of major concern for us is the Energy Sector. What is being done about the energy sector?
The introductory page to the Energy Sector of US Infrastructure on the Department of Homeland Security website states:
“Without a stable energy supply, health and welfare are threatened, and the US economy cannot function.” Furthermore, this sector provides an “‘enabling function’ across all critical infrastructure sectors.”
In short, all of the other sectors of the US Infrastructure are dependent on the energy sector. Which include:
