Now that the Afghan women are safely\u00a0placed in their temporary accommodation and coming to terms with a new way of\u00a0life, it\u2019s time to look to their future and a\u00a0more\u00a0permanent integration plan that will support them\u00a0in\u00a0their independence.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke to Marina LeGree, CEO of Ascend, on the next steps in the resettlement plans for the Ascend women in Ireland and what shape this would take. Here\u2019s what she had to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ascend has a five pillar approach to the women of Ascend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Physical Fitness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We will\u00a0support this through the\u00a0Global Ascend\u2019s classroom,\u00a0an online programme\u00a0where the girls can access\u00a0activities at least a couple\u00a0of days a week. The programme includes team workouts, yoga, psychology and\u00a0wellbeing\u00a0classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Leadership\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Where we\u00a0teach\u00a0leadership\u00a0skills\u00a0and\u00a0identify\u00a0team\u00a0leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Service\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Where the\u00a0women\u00a0partner\u00a0with\u00a0local\u00a0organisations\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0back\u00a0and\u00a0essentially\u00a0volunteer\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Mountain and Rock\u00a0Climbing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First\u00a0and\u00a0foremost\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0a\u00a0mountain\u00a0climbing\u00a0organisation,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0DNA\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0not going\u00a0to\u00a0leave\u00a0that behind.\u00a0The\u00a0women of Ascend are passionate\u00a0about\u00a0climbing,\u00a0and\u00a0outdoor\u00a0pursuits.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0good\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0girls,\u00a0it\u00a0lifts\u00a0their\u00a0spirits and\u00a0gives\u00a0them\u00a0a\u00a0sense\u00a0of\u00a0achievement.\u201d\u00a0We would love to see regular climbing\u00a0and hiking expeditions\u00a0organized\u00a0that\u00a0would\u00a0include\u00a0the local partners and the\u00a0community for\u00a0these\u00a0girls. It\u2019s\u00a0also\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0opportunity\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0women\u00a0to\u00a0reflect\u00a0after\u00a0an\u00a0expedition\u00a0and\u00a0laugh\u00a0and share stories of how seemingly\u00a0insurmountable\u00a0obstacles were challenged\u00a0and\u00a0conquered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Mental Health\u00a0<\/strong>and that is\u00a0different for each one of them.\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although they have a very\u00a0unique shared experience,\u00a0their own journey and what\u00a0they have faced as individuals\u00a0will\u00a0colour\u00a0how\u00a0they\u00a0see their\u00a0future.\u00a0Counselling\u00a0and psychotherapy is an important\u00a0part of the support in helping\u00a0these\u00a0women\u00a0as\u00a0they\u00a0navigate\u00a0their\u00a0new\u00a0life\u00a0experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resettlement of the individuals is being taken forward on the ground by volunteer communities. One is based in Galway with 10 girls and one in Dublin with another 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the moment the priority is on developing a resettlement plan for each of the girls to ascertain what they want for themselves and how the local community can best support them on their journey to independence. This will give<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a clear picture of the strengths and challenges they are currently facing and any fears they foresee in their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan will cover housing,education and employmentand cover their own vision oftheir future. It will also identify skills and talents that help in gaining employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, we want to create a pathway to education for every single girl that comes out of Ascend, whatever that means. Not all will follow an academic path to university but with Ascend and our partners, there is the flexibility to figure out what is feasible, fill the gaps and bring in the resources where needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will spend a lot of energy in the coming years determining how to best set them up on a path to success. Although the resettlement stage of our programme is due to be completed in September 2022 our support for their education will continue indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
